What Happens to Us After We Die?
It’s a big question. Maybe the biggest question of all. In the end, no one truly knows.
There is a great deal of speculation. And there are plenty of stories going around about near death experiences.
Amid all the theory, all the conjecture, and all the rumors, the topic of what happens to us when we die is something of a mystery. All we can do is scour the scriptures for clues to the answers.
What does the Bible say about death?
In Ecclesiastes, it says that the living know they will die but the dead know nothing. It goes on to state they have no more reward for their memory is forgotten.
Interesting. According to the wisest man to ever live, nothing happens after death.
Jesus likened it to a sleep, where the mind is not aware of anything going on in the world.
But let’s dig a little deeper.
In 1st Thessalonians, it says that the dead in Christ will rise first and then those who are alive and remain will be caught up to meet them in the air.
This verse is talking about the resurrection at Christ’s second coming. According to this, what happens after death is extremely clear if we look at it from the proper point of view.
Think about it, if when we died we went to heaven, why would Jesus need to resurrect us at his second coming? Seems like extra work to me.
And then there’s the problem of Lazarus and all the others who were resurrected in the Bible. Elijah resurrected someone. Jesus performed this miracle with a few people. Yet none of them spoke of an afterlife.
To hammer home this point, if Lazarus had been in heaven or as many people call it “a better place,” wouldn’t it be extremely cruel of Jesus to bring him back and resurrect his mortal body?
Making Sure Things Add Up
When we study the Bible in regards to any topic, we need to make sure we keep an open mind but that we see things from a rational and logical point of view. In the example above, we see that to believe something happens to you after death is in direct contradiction with what the scriptures have told us.
But what about the parable of the rich man and the other Lazarus?
If you’re not familiar, that story tells of a man who dies and goes to hell and a man who dies and goes to heaven. Because that story contradicts the bulk of proof in the rest of the Bible, we must assume that it is a parable and not a tale of actual events.
On top of that, it is illogical to claim that a God of love took the time to scientifically create a place where he could torture human beings for all of eternity.
What we know, based on scriptural evidence, is that nothing happens when we die. That our bodies lie asleep until the second coming of Christ. At that point, the dead in Christ are raised to meet their Creator.
